Read all about it!: NewspaperARCHIVE

The Central Arkansas Library System has recently added more databases to our selection of online resources. A database of particular interest to genealogists and researchers of Arkansas history is NewspaperARCHIVE, a small database of historical Arkansas newspapers. Researchers who use Newspapers.com will see some similarities between the two databases, but the NewspaperARCHIVE database has some newspapers that are not included in Newspapers.com.

According to the database’s description: “NewspaperARCHIVE is the world’s best resource for historical and genealogical information. Our unique archive spans more than 400 years of family history, small-town events, world news and more.” While the database provides access to newspapers from other states, CALS’s subscription includes only Arkansas newspapers. The database has newspapers from twenty-five cities around the state, both large and small, with some cities having more than one paper.

This resource is especially helpful to researchers—and especially now—because it is accessible remotely from home through the CALS website. Whether you access it from home or the library, you will have to create an email address/password account before searching the database. This allows users to collect their research into one place and come back to it any time. And there are other perks: A CALS staff member used the database recently for some research and received an email when some new information on the person she was researching had been added.

Searching in NewspaperARCHIVE is easy, with basic and advanced search options. You can search all the Arkansas newspapers at once or search within a city. The dates of coverage for each city varies, but the dates can be determined by clicking on the list of cities on the home page.

To get started on NewspaperARCHIVE, go to the CALS homepage, www.cals.org, and search Website and Events using the search term newspaper. It will be one of the first several databases listed. Use your library barcode to set up an account, and then start searching!
