In 1996 the book was listed on The New York Public Library’s Books of the Century, the only Arkansan contributor to be included on this list. Brown not only garnered international success as an author, but the book has been incorporated as a foundational text in Native American studies, adapted into an HBO film in 2007, and continues to be translated into over 17 languages—a testament to the widespread popularity and importance of the book.
